Five Steps To Choosing A Home Security Company

Five Steps To Choosing A Home Security Company

Not all security companies are created equal. Choosing a home security system and a company to install, and maybe even monitor it, is and should be an in depth task. You shouldn’t choose the first one you come across and you should rely on what your best friend happens to think. Instead, follow the five steps below and you’ll be well on your way to good home security.

1. Get in touch with the right organizations

There are organizations that specialize in dealing with things like home security and alarm companies. These differ depending on where you live, but they’re easy to track down. They’ll be able to send you information on what to look for in a security company and also give you ratings on the companies that operate in your area. You can also contact your insurance company. They have a lot invested in your home as well, and they’ll be sure to recommend you to only the most reputable places. Oh, and they’ll also point you towards those fore mentioned organizations.

2. Invite over a few reps to see your home

After you’ve narrowed down your options based on those recommendations, invite a rep from each company to your home—not all at the same time! That said, you want to make sure it’s at a time when you’re whole family is around because a good security company will want to know about everyone’s daily routines and habits so they can recommend the best system. This is also good because you want everyone in your home to be able to associate a friendly face with the alarm system they’ll soon be getting.

3. Make sure they inspect your home and make suggestions

Insist on this if you have to, but make sure the rep takes an active look around your home and property to get a feel for its security and ability to be secured. Then have them write down a list of recommendations for things you can do to improve the security, and not just things that they can do. Once all the reps have given you a list like this you’ll not only have some good advice to follow, but you’ll have a clue as to who actually knows what they’re talking about.

4. Question everything

The reps will recommend different features for your security system. They do this because those things will add to your security and because it’s how they make money. Even when you agree with the recommendations though, you should question what you’re being told. Have them defend their rationale. This will not only help you decide on what you need but it will give you a better understanding of what you get.

5. Check their technology against the latest technology

Find out what equipment they’ll be using to secure your home and then check that against the latest and best technologies to hit the market. At the end of the day you probably won’t need the latest and greatest, but you will surely want to hear the reps explain to you the ways in which their current equipment sizes up.
